i think she portrayed how “fans” buried her, then tried to project her onto every version they could think of and were just getting worked up because she was no longer there and, in the end, she is the one to bury them as she reclaims who she once was and always has been.

I think the music video represents how people deal with a breakup from both sides. One person buries the relationship, avoids it, and suppresses their feelings, while the other hits rock bottom, sits with the pain, and actually deals with it. Ariana’s “death” is symbolic, not physical, but spiritual/emotional. He didn’t literally kill her; he emotionally buried the relationship and avoided processing the breakup through suppression. From Ariana’s side, it feels like she has emotionally died, and only after death comes clarity. She is shown underground in a dungeon, which represents her inner world or subconscious. Around her are books and boxes labeled with things like" Trauma, Monsters, Things I Should Have Said, Things I Shouldn’t Have Said, and Ignored Feelings". She picks up a book called Insecurities and starts reading it, symbolizing self-awareness and finally confronting parts of herself she had ignored. Meanwhile, from his side, he sees her everywhere. he’s not being followed by her ghost; he’s being haunted by his own suppressed feelings, guilt, and unresolved emotions. Every time he tries to get rid of her or erase the memories, it backfires and hurts him even more. The harder he runs from the breakup, the more it follows him. But there’s only so far he can run. Eventually, he decides to go back to her, but she’s no longer where he left her. She has gained awareness, healed, and transcended. At the end, Ariana appears at the grave holding a shovel. At first, it looks like revenge for “killing” her, but she buries him not out of revenge, but because she wants him to go through it, face his emotions and deal with the pain instead of suppressing it, exactly as she did. For me, the video feels less like a revenge story and more like a psychological portrayal of how two people process heartbreak in completely different ways. P.S.: This is just my own interpretation; it’s not the actual context. Ariana said the song is about the constant criticism she receives from her fans. I still believe it's ok to have our own vision and perception of this mv. It’s an actual piece of art, and art can be interpreted in different ways based on each person’s perspective. Thanks for reading all of this. I honestly didn’t expect you guys would take the time to read it. Love ;)
